In this episode, Mark Russinovich, CTO of Microsoft Azure revealed Brain, the AI-powered AIOps system that continuously monitors Azure’s health, detects incidents, identifies root causes, and increasingly automates responses such as pausing problematic deployments and notifying affected customers. Built on Azure Resource Graph, Brain creates a real-time digital twin of Azure, mapping dependencies across hundreds of services, data centers, and regions. Although Brain predates the generative AI boom, years of data engineering, standardized service-level indicators (SLIs), and machine learning laid the foundation for today’s capabilities.
Brain combines standardized SLIs, service-specific monitoring, and third-party signals to detect anomalies, while ML models dynamically establish service baselines and correlate outages with software rollouts. Microsoft says automated notifications have reduced customer support tickets by four to six times, with 80–90% of Brain-covered services receiving notifications within 15 minutes, often in under five. The company is also layering LLM-powered agents, called Triangle, on top of Brain to streamline incident routing and eventually enable AI agents to autonomously troubleshoot and remediate outages.

In this episode of The New Stack Makers, Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Technical Fellow, Brendan Burns discusses how AI is reshaping Kubernetes and modern infrastructure. Originally designed for stateless applications, Kubernetes is evolving to support AI workloads that require complex GPU scheduling, co-location, and failure sensitivity. Features like Dynamic Resource Allocation and projects such as KAITO introduce AI-specific capabilities, while maintaining Kubernetes’ core strength: vendor-neutral extensibility.
Burns highlights that AI also changes how systems are monitored. Success is no longer binary; it depends on answer quality, user feedback, and large-scale testing using thousands of prompts and even AI evaluators.
On software development, Burns argues that the industry’s focus on reviewing AI-generated code is temporary. Just as developers stopped inspecting compiler output, AI-generated code will become a disposable artifact validated by tests and specifications. This shift will redefine engineering roles and may lead to programming languages designed for machines rather than humans, signaling a fundamental transformation in how software is built and maintained.

Helm — originally a hackathon project called Kate’s Place — turned 10 in 2025, marking the milestone with the release of Helm 4, its first major update in six years. Created by Matt Butcher and colleagues as a playful take on “K8s,” the early project won a small prize but quickly grew into a serious effort when Deus leadership recognized the need for a Kubernetes package manager. Renamed Helm, it rapidly expanded with community contributors and became one of the first CNCF graduating projects.
Helm 4 reflects years of accumulated design debt and evolving use cases. After the rapid iterations of Helm 1, 2, and 3, the latest version modernizes logging, improves dependency management, and introduces WebAssembly-based plugins for cross-platform portability—addressing the growing diversity of operating systems and architectures. Beyond headline features, maintainers emphasize that mature projects increasingly deliver “boring” but essential improvements, such as better logging, which simplify workflows and integrate more cleanly with other tools. Helm’s re-architected internals also lay the foundation for new chart and package capabilities in upcoming 4.x releases.

Today we’re joined by Jay Emery, director of technical sales & architecture at Microsoft Azure. In our conversation with Jay, we discuss the challenges faced by organizations when building LLM-based applications, and we explore some of the techniques they are using to overcome them. We dive into the concerns around security, data privacy, cost management, and performance as well as the ability and effectiveness of prompting to achieve the desired results versus fine-tuning, and when each approach should be applied. We cover methods such as prompt tuning and prompt chaining, prompt variance, fine-tuning, and RAG to enhance LLM output along with ways to speed up inference performance such as choosing the right model, parallelization, and provisioned throughput units (PTUs). In addition to that, Jay also shared several intriguing use cases describing how businesses use tools like Azure Machine Learning prompt flow and Azure ML AI Studio to tailor LLMs to their unique needs and processes.

In this episode, Matt Butcher, CEO of Fermyon Technologies, discusses the potential impact of the component model on WebAssembly (Wasm) and its integration into the cloud-native landscape. WebAssembly is a binary instruction format enabling code to run anywhere, written in developers' preferred languages. The component model aims to provide a common way for WebAssembly libraries to express their needs and connect with other modules, reducing the barriers and maintenance of existing libraries. Butcher believes this model could be a game changer, allowing new languages to compile WebAssembly and utilize existing libraries seamlessly.
WebAssembly also shows promise in delivering on the long-awaited potential of serverless computing. Unlike traditional virtual machines and containers, WebAssembly boasts a rapid startup time and addresses various developer challenges. Butcher states that developers have been eagerly waiting for a platform with these characteristics, hinting at a potential resurgence of serverless. He clarifies that WebAssembly is not a "Kubernetes killer" but can coexist with container technologies, evident from the Kubernetes ecosystem's interest in supporting WebAssembly.

DETROIT — Modern software projects’ emphasis on agility and building community has caused a lot of security best practices, developed in the early days of the Linux kernel, to fall by the wayside, according to Aeva Black, an open source veteran of 25 years.
“And now we're playing catch up,“ said Black, an open source hacker in Microsoft Azure’s Office of the CTO “A lot of less than ideal practices have taken root in the past five years. We're trying to help educate everybody now.”
Chris Short, senior developer advocate with Amazon Web Services (AWS), challenged the notion of “shifting left” and giving developers greater responsibility for security. “If security is everybody's job, it's nobody's job,” said Short, founder of the DevOps-ish newsletter.
“We've gone through this evolution: just develop secure code, and you'll be fine,” he said. “There's no such thing as secure code. There are errors in the underlying languages sometimes …. There's no such thing as secure software. So you have to mitigate and then be ready to defend against coming vulnerabilities.”

‘Trust, but Verify’
For our podcast guests, “trust, but verify” is a slogan more organizations need to live by.
A lot of the security problems that plague the software supply chain, Black said, are companies — especially smaller organizations — “just pulling software directly from upstream. They trust a build someone's published, they don't verify, they don't check the hash, they don't check a signature, they just download a Docker image or binary from somewhere and run it in production.”
That practice, Black said, “exposes them to anything that's changed upstream. If upstream has a bug or a network error in that repository, then they can't update as well.” Organizations, they said, should maintain an internal staging environment where they can verify code retrieved from upstream before pushing it to production — or rebuild it, in case a vulnerability is found, and push it back upstream.
That build environment should also be firewalled, Short added: “Create those safeguards of, ‘Oh, you want to pull a package from not an approved source or not a trusted source? Sorry, not gonna happen.’”
Being able to rebuild code that has vulnerabilities to make it more secure — or even being able to identify what’s wrong, and quickly — are skills that not enough developers have, the podcast guests noted.
More automation is part of the solution, Short said. But, he added, by itself it's not enough. “Continuous learning is what we do here as a job," he said. "If you're kind of like, this is my skill set, this is my toolbox and I'm not willing to grow past that, you’re setting yourself up for failure, right? So you have to be able to say, almost at a moment's notice, ‘I need to change something across my entire environment. How do I do that?’”
GitBOM and the ‘Signal-to-Noise Ratio’
As both Black and Short said during our conversation, there’s no such thing as perfectly secure code. And even such highly touted tools as software bills of materials, or SBOMs, fall short of giving teams all the information they need to determine code’s safety.
“Many projects have dependencies 10, 20 30 layers deep,” Black said. “And so if your SBOM only goes one or two layers, you just don't have enough information to know if as a vulnerability five or 10 layers down.”
Short brought up another issue with SBOMs: “There's nothing you can act on. The biggest thing for Ops teams or security teams is actionable information.”
While Short applauded recent efforts to improve user education, he said he’s pessimistic about the state of cybersecurity: “There’s not a lot right now that's getting people actionable data. It's a lot of noise still, and we need to refine these systems well enough to know that, like, just because I have Bash doesn't necessarily mean I have every vulnerability in Bash.”
One project aimed at addressing the situation is GitBOM, a new open source initiative. “Fundamentally, I think it’s the best bet we have to provide really high fidelity signal to defense teams,” said Black, who has worked on the project and produced a white paper on it this past January.
GitBOM — the name will likely be changed, Black said —takes the underlying technology that Git relies on, using a hash table to track changes in a project's code over time, and reapplies it to track the supply chain of software. The technology is used to build a hash table connecting all of the dependencies in a project and building what GItBOM’s creators call an artifact dependency graph.
“We had a team working on it a couple of proof of concepts right now,” Black said. “And the main effect I'm hoping to achieve from this is a small change in every language and compiler … then we can get traceability across the whole supply chain.”
In the meantime, Short said, there’s plenty of room for broader adoption of the best practtices that currently exist. “Security vendors, I feel, like need to do a better job of moving teams in the right direction as far as action,” he said.
At DevOps Chicago this fall, Short said, he ran an open space session in which he asked participants for their pain points related to working with containers
“And the whole room admitted to not using least privilege, not using policy engines that are available in the Kubernetes space,” he said. “So there's a lot of complexity that we’ve got to help people understand the need for it, and how to implement it.”

AUSTIN, TEX. — In one of the most compelling keynote addresses at The Linux Foundation’s Open Source Summit North America, held here in June, Aeva Black, a veteran of the open source community, said that a friend of theirs recently commented that, “I feel like all the trans women I know on Twitter, are software developers.”
There’s a reason for that, Black said. It’s called “survivor bias”: The transgender software developers the friend knows on Twitter are only a small sample of the trans kids who survived into adulthood, or didn’t get pushed out of mainstream society.
“It's a pretty common trope, at least on the internet: transwomen are all software developers, we all have high-paying jobs, we're TikTok or on Twitter. And that's really a sampling bias, the transgender people who have the privilege to be loud,” said Black, in this On the Road episode of The New Stack Makers podcast.
Black, whose keynote alerted the conference attendees about how the rights of transgender individuals are under attack around the United States, and the role tech can play, currently works in Microsoft Azure's Office of the Chief Technology Officer and holds seats on the boards of the Open Source Initiative and on the OpenSSF's Technical Advisory Council. In this episode of Makers, they unpacked the keynote’s themes with Heather Joslyn, TNS features editor.
Citing Pew Research Center data, released in June, reports that 5% of Americans under 30 identify as transgender or nonbinary — roughly the same percentage that have red hair.
The Pew study, and the latest "Stack Overflow Developer Survey," reveal that younger people are more likely than their elders to claim a transgender or nonbinary identity. Failure to accept these people, Black said, could have an impact on open source work, and tech work more generally.
“If you're managing a project, and you want to attract younger developers who could then pick it up and carry on the work over time, you need to make sure that you're welcoming of all younger developers,” they said.
Rethinking Codes of Conduct
Codes of Conduct, must-haves for meetups, conferences and open source projects over the past few years, are too often thought of as tools for punishment, Black said in their keynote. For Makers, they advocated for thinking of those codes as tools for community stewardship.
As a former member of the Kubernetes Code of Conduct committee, Black pointed out that “80% of what we did … while I served wasn't punishing people. It was stepping in when there was conflict, when people you know, stepped on someone else's toe, accidentally offended somebody. Like, ‘OK, hang on, Let's sort this out.' So it was much more stewardship, incident response mediation.”
LGBT people are currently the targets of new legislation in several U.S. states. The tech world and its community leaders should protect community members who may be vulnerable in this new political climate, Black said.
“The culture of a community is determined by the worst behavior its leaders tolerate, we have to understand and it's often difficult to do so how our actions impact those who have less privileged than us, the most marginalized in our community,” they said.
For example, “When thinking of where to host a conference, think about the people in one's community, even those who may be new contributors. Will they be safe in that location?”

For Matt Butcher, CEO and founder of Fermyon Technologies, the future of Wasm lies in running it outside of the browser and running it inside of everything, from proxy servers to video games.”
And, he added, “the really exciting part is being able to run it in the cloud, as well as a cloud service alongside like virtual machines and containers.”

With key programming languages like Ruby, Python and C# adding support for WebAssembly’s new capabilities, Wasm is gaining critical mass, Butcher said.
“What we're talking about now is the realization of the potential that's been around in WebAssembly for a long time. But as people get excited, and open source projects start to adopt it, then what we're seeing now is like the beginning of the tidal wave.”
But before widespread adoption can happen, Butcher said, there’s still work to be done in preparing the environment the next wave of Wasm: cloud computing.
Along with other members of the Bytecode Alliance, such as Cosmonic, Fastly, Intel and Fermyon is working to improve the developer experience and environment this year. The next step, he added is to “start to build this first wave of applications that really highlight where it can happen for us.”
The rise of Wasm represents a new era in cloud native technology, Butcher noted. “We love containers. Many of us have been involved in the Kubernetes ecosystem for years and years. I built Helm originally; that's still, in a way, my baby.
“But also we're excited because now we're finding solutions to some problems that we didn't see get solved in the container ecosystem. And that's why we talk about it as sort of like the next wave.”
Wasm and a ‘Frictionless’ Dev Experience
Fermyon introduced its “frictionless” WebAssembly platform in June here at The Linux Foundation’s Open Source Summit North America. The platform, built on technologies including HashiCorp’s Nomad and Consul, enables the writing of microservices and web applications. Fermyon’s open source tool, Spin, helps developers push apps from their local dev environments into their Fermyon platform.
One aspect of Wasm’s future that Butcher highlighted in our Makers discussion is how it can be scalable while also remaining lightweight in terms of the cloud resources it consumes.
“Along with creating this great developer experience in a secure platform, we're also going to help people save money on their cloud costs, because cloud costs have just kind of ballooned out of control,” he said.
“If we can be really mindful of the resources we use, and help the developer understand what it means to write code that can be nimble, and can be light on resource usage. The real objective is to make it so when they write code, it just happens to have those characteristics.”
For those interested in taking WebAssembly for a spin, Fermyon has created an online game called Finicky Whiskers, intended to show how microservices can be reimagined with Wasm.

About Chloe Condon
Chloe is a Bay Area based Cloud Advocate for Microsoft. Previously, she worked at Sentry.io where she was an advocate for their open-source & hosted error monitoring tool, and created the award winning "Sentry Scouts" program. Her unique demos and projects with Microsoft Azure have ranged from fake boyfriend alerts to Mario Kart "astrology", and have been featured in VICE, The New York Times, as well as SmashMouth's Twitter account. Chloe holds a BA in Drama from San Francisco State University and is a graduate of Hackbright Academy. She prides herself on being a non-traditional background engineer, is likely one of the only engineers you'll meet who has played an ogre princess, crayon, and the back-end of a cow on a professional stage (a true "triple threat"), and is passionate about bringing folks with non-traditional backgrounds into tech.
