Building Software That People Love
Building great software always involves technical problem solving, but the best software goes beyond function. It feels fluid, coherent, and genuinely fun to use. This quality lives at the intersection of engineering and design, and very few teams know how to reliably produce it.
Metalab is an engineering and design studio that has worked with some of the most successful companies in tech, including Apple, Slack, Uber, and Instacart. The studio is known for bringing together software engineering and design craft in a way that few studios can match.
Wesley Yu is the VP of Engineering at Metalab, where he leads the teams that design and build digital products for early-stage companies. In this episode, Wesley joins Josh Goldberg to discuss how Metalab approaches tech stack selection for client projects, why agency work demands a bias toward boring and stable technology, how iterative development and deliberately ugly apps lead to better final products, and how AI tools are changing the boundary between design and engineering.
Josh Goldberg is an independent full time open source developer in the TypeScript ecosystem. He works on projects that help developers write better TypeScript more easily, most notably on typescript-eslint: the tooling that enables ESLint and Prettier to run on TypeScript code. Josh regularly contributes to open source projects in the ecosystem such as ESLint and TypeScript. Josh is a Microsoft MVP for developer technologies and the author of the acclaimed Learning TypeScript (O’Reilly), a cherished resource for any developer seeking to learn TypeScript without any prior experience outside of JavaScript. Josh regularly presents talks and workshops at bootcamps, conferences, and meetups to share knowledge on TypeScript, static analysis, open source, and general frontend and web development.

Interface is everything, and everything is an interface
Ryan talks with Wesley Yu, head of engineering at Metalab, about the evolution of interfaces in technology, the pressure that UI generated on the fly would put on your backend systems, and why AI is just the latest and fanciest in a long line of CRUD apps.
Episode notes:
Metalab designs interfaces for top brands around the world, helping them design, build, and ship their products.

I’ve run 75+ businesses. Here’s why you’re probably chasing the wrong idea. | Andrew Wilkinson (co‑founder of Tiny)
Andrew Wilkinson is the co‑founder of Tiny, a holding company that quietly owns more than three dozen profitable internet and consumer brands, including Dribbble and the AeroPress coffee maker. Starting as a teenage barista and web designer, he’s created a portfolio approaching $300 million in yearly sales (and he was personally worth over $1 billion at one point)—all without ever raising venture capital.
In this conversation, you’ll learn:
1. The “fish where the fish are” framework for spotting high‑margin niches no one else notices
2. The exact agent stack (Lindy, Replit, Limitless, and more) that supercharges Andrew’s day-to-day productivity (and has replaced his assistant)
3. How Andrew evaluates companies in less than 15 minutes using Buffett‑style moats and “lazy leadership”
4. Telltale signs you should shut down (or never start) that startup idea
5. His journey from crippling anxiety to clarity through SSRIs and ADHD medication
6. His prediction that most knowledge work will be automated—and the skills to teach your kids now

How To Stop Feeling Like Your Success Is Never Enough - Andrew Wilkinson - #818
Andrew Wilkinson is an entrepreneur, co-founder of Tiny, and an investor.
"I'll be happy when..." is the beginning of many people's mindsets about life and happiness. We assume that happiness sits on the other side of the next set of goals, even though right now we're on the other side of our last set of goals. So the question is, what if you're a billionaire? Does this pattern ever stop?
Expect to learn whether successful people are just disordered, if SSRIs aren’t actually that bad, what Andrew learned from Warren Buffett, whether there's a number you reach in your bank account to feel like you ‘made it’, why wealthy people distort reality, where to find smart people to hire for your business, how to learn to trust your entrepreneurial gut and much more...
